Because bicycles have a significant impact on natural environmental protection, representatives of the bicycle industry and PeopleForBikes promotion leaders have proposed to reduce or exempt the tariffs on imported bicycles in the United States.

Since the World Trade Organization proposed to reduce tariffs on related environmentally friendly products, U.S. trade representatives have begun to hold hearings for corporate groups.

The WTO has approved a 5% reduction in tariffs on green products in 2012, and by 2015 there will be at least 54 types of green products, including solar panels, gas and wind turbines, ash removers and catalytic converters. The United States will start negotiations on environmental products and services (EGA) with WTO members to add a new round of environmental protection green product categories. Margevicius, Specialized's executive vice president, and members of the Board of Directors of the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association will testify at the hearing.

Margevicius believes that bicycles are a green product, and the current US tariff of 11% is not good for anyone, not to mention that the domestic bicycle production in the United States is not perfect. "Today's high tariffs on bicycles and bicycle parts generally cannot protect high-quality domestic manufactured products. On the contrary, they impose additional fees, causing unnecessary expenses when people buy. This particularly affects low-income earners, who would have chosen bicycles as a mode of travel, but now they tend to prefer more expensive cars. If bicycles and bicycle-related products are listed as green products, they will enjoy the tariff reduction policy agreed in 2012. The benefits of cycling are obvious, in terms of saving energy, alleviating urban congestion and promoting a healthier lifestyle. The zero-emission form of transportation represented by bicycles offsets the use of other less clean commuting methods, such as gasoline-engined cars. "Margevicius added.

The hearing is expected to start next month.
