It is reported that in the first quarter of 2014, SHIMANO's sales reached US\$7.422 billion, a significant increase compared to US\$6.205 billion in the same period last year. The bicycle industry segment reached US\$5.986 billion, an increase of 19%.

SHIMANO analyzed the reasons for the sales growth. One factor is the relatively warm winter in Europe, and another is an upcoming consumption tax increase in Japan. In addition, the depreciation of the yen has made its products more competitive. However, the severe winter in the United States led to a slight decline in local sales. Nevertheless, SHIMANO still admits that sales growth far exceeded expectations.

Although SHIMANO is low-key and hasn't made a big deal about it, it is indeed currently the only supplier of hydraulic disc brakes for road bikes. This means that it not only occupies a place in the brake market, but its speed system will also grow accordingly. Early 2015 hydraulic disc brake road bikes were all equipped with SHIMANO's R785 hydraulic disc brakes, and SRAM inevitably lost sales in this area before the improved version of its hydraulic disc brakes came out.

Seeing the rapid growth in the first quarter, SHIMANO revised its annual forecast as early as February. However, the company does not believe that this year's growth will be 20% compared to last year. It expects a year-on-year growth of 9% by June and 6% by the end of the year.
