See if Nanjing can become the official third "bicycle city"
Currently, the UCI has named two "Bicycle Cities," Melbourne and Copenhagen. Nanjing is striving to become the third.
On December 5th, the Nanjing Cycling Association was officially established. The association is dedicated to organizing various mass cycling competitions and exchanges, hosting high-level cycling competitions, strengthening exchanges and cooperation with domestic and international cycling organizations, and actively promoting the popularization and development of cycling in Nanjing.
Starting in 2013, Nanjing will gradually introduce international road, mountain, track, and BMX cycling events. The first competition will be an international road cycling race to be held in Nanjing before October next year.
Starting in 2015, these four international cycling events will be held annually in Nanjing.
It is understood that in international road cycling races, the highest level is 2.0, such as the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia; any international competition with 90% professional teams participating is classified as 2.1; if 70%-80% of the participating teams are professional, it is classified as 2.2. The international road cycling race to be held in Nanjing next year will be a 2.2 level event, the same level as last year's Taihu Lake race. In addition, Nanjing plans to build five dedicated cycling paths: Xuanwu Lake Ring Road, Zhongshan Mausoleum Ring Road, Pukou Laoshan Ring Mountain Road, Xianlin University Town Ring Road, and the outer route of Zhongshan Scenic Area. The municipal government is currently planning to combine the construction of cycling paths with urban greenway planning. The 1000 kilometers of greenways planned for the urban area include main city roads, green landscape belts along rivers and lakes, and greenways in suburban parks. To encourage more citizens to participate in cycling, Nanjing will also place a batch of public bicycles at subway stations and bus stops, create a number of cycling clubs, and build a number of cycling paths.
